L&CPU Novice Cup - CAR 21/10/17

On Sunday 15th October SPS along with 26 other North West photography groups took part in the new L&CPU Novice Cup which was held as part of the annual L&CPU Big Day event. There were many discussions regarding the competition name and maybe the name Novice was a poor choice as it is open to all non-PAGB accredited or international saloon winning photographers. However, the name will stay as all the trophies have been engraved :-)

A team of eight SPS members entered the mono and colour sections where we came 7th in the monos, 4th in the colour and 5th place overall. Special mentions go to John Earnshaw who was commended on his colour image entitled 'Grizzly bear relaxing on beach' and Justin Garner for his mono image entitled 'Ease back'. Full results can be obtained from - here

Sale Festival Photo. Comp. - John Earnshaw 02/04/15

Sale Festival 2015 will be holding another Photographic Competition similar to those held in previous years, organised by Sale Photographic Society. The competition is for keen Amateur Photographers and the theme of this year's competition is "At Work or Play"

We would love you to enter the competition, and with a theme like this, the opportunities are vast.

But "At Work or Play", what does it mean? Well basically, it's anything that you perceive of as being related to Work of any kind, or Play of any kind, or indeed, a combination of the two.

It could be a picture of workers on a building site, people having fun on the beach, a game of cricket or football, or anything else you care to think of that depicts the theme in the way you interpret it. The list is endless and we're not trying to define where Work and Play starts and finishes - we'll leave that for you to decide. In fact, professional rugby players and footballers fit the bill on both counts. Wherever you go, you will find examples of "Work or Play" and you won't have to travel far to encounter great shots - and we would love to see them

Every entrant will have at least one of their prints displayed in the exhibition at Sale Waterside which will run for 4 weeks from the competition prize giving (12th June).

You can enter up to 4 pictures with a maximum size of 15" x 10" (26 x 36cm), and don't forget there is also a junior competition for the under 16's. So if you have any junior friends or relatives, lend them a camera so they can get snapping, and maybe win the Junior Prize.

A full set of rules can be downloaded from here.

Merit competition in April - Richard Parish 25/03/15

Our second new-style Merits competition is approaching (hand-in on 9th April) and the new entry form has just been uploaded to the documents page. Please note that this is a one-off entry form, usable ONLY for this competition. The sections are Open, Travel and Creative (definitions of these subjects may be found below) and all sections may contain Colour and Mono images as there are no Mono-only sections.

Competition Update - Andy Carpenter 21/02/15

As mentioned by Richard on Thursday, the new quarterley competition forms have now been uploaded to the documents page.

Also the competition secretaries have been asked for a clarification for the Creative Section in the Merit competitions. So the actual definition is 'A creative image shows the application of a creative process (a viewer will think that the image is novel, imaginative, ingenious or inspired). This process may use imaginative camera techniques (e.g. slow shutter speeds and panning), subject matter, lighting or viewpoints, image manipulation or the artistic combination of two or more images. Some definitions of creativity require that a creative image should show an altered reality, this is not necessary for SPS creative sections. The use of a single image manipulation technique, e.g. High Dynamic Range (HDR), is unlikely to produce an image that would be perceived as creative.'

Fran Halsall 26 February - John Earnshaw 15/02/15

Sale Festival Photo. comp. 2014 - Joyce Hollows 30/06/14

Once again two of our members, Mike Bannister and John Earnshaw, played their part in the organisation of Sale Festival Photographic Competition. There were 92 entries overall, from 27 authors. The set title was 'The Old and the New' and there were many varied and interesting interpretations of this subject. The images were judged by Manchester Radio's Jimmy Wragg, who gave an entertaining account of his reasons for choosing the award winners, and, although his overall feeling was that the entries were of a very high standard, the one which 'jumped out' at him was the winner of the Junior Section. This was a very striking image, entitled 'My new bellys' by 12 year old Ria Raina. Well done Ria!

The winning image in the Senior Section was Peter Redford's 'Push me, pull me' Jane Hawnaur came second with 'Reflections of Trinity Church' and the third place was taken by Andy Carpenter, with 'word'c' 1600'. Commended were: 'Aspirations' by Tim Holt 'Generations' by Tim Holt 'Life of a Flower' by Andy Carpenter 'Old Chapel, New Cathedral' by Liam O'Keeffe

The presentations were made by the Mayor of Trafford , Ejaz Malik, on Friday 13th June. Several members of Sale Photographic Society were among the winners, so congratulations to all who entered, but especially our club members. A big thank you is due to Mike and John for their organization and enthusiasm.

After the presentation of the awards, we were privileged to be able to watch a presentation byJohn Gardner, entitled:'Wild Scenes,Wild Life,Wild Places'. John showed us a wide selection of his amazing Natural History pictures, taken during his travels around the world. We were all stunned by the quality of his work, and many people felt that the final section of images of wild horses in the Camargue region of France were amongst the best images they had ever seen. Thanks again to John Earnshaw and Mike Bannister for their part in the organisation of the evening.

Our next meeting - Mike Bannister 20/06/14

Just a quick reminder to all that there is not a formal meeting at the church next week (26 June), as many of us will be meeting to take some images for the 4-way battle as arranged by Ken.

President's Evening - Joyce Hollows 12/06/14

This year our venue for the annual president's evening outing was at Manchester City Airport, Barton. About 22 members managed to attend, having braved the rush-hour traffic, and were very lucky to have a wide range of photo opportunities, in bright, breezy conditions.

After a look around the museum, guided by Eric Isaacs, there was a talk on the history of the airport, possibly the oldest in operation in the world. It certainly has the oldest operational control tower in the world. Some of the buildings are listed, including one hangar which was built as a passenger terminal for KLM airlines. Unfortunately, this venture never went ahead, as the runway was too short.

On our guided tour there were many photo opportunities, as helicopters came and went, and various maintenance work was going on around the airfield. There were numerous parked planes, both outside and in the hangars.

Some of the more active members climbed up the control tower, giving superb views of the surrounding area; there should be some stunning photographs from that viewpoint.

We finished the evening, as the sun went down, in the very pleasant clubhouse, where we were all ready for the meal prepared for us, and a drink or two.

Thank you to our President, Chris Boyes, for his excellent organization, and possibly a word in the right direction to give us a sunny evening. Now we can look forward to seeing some interesting images..

Sale Festival Photo. Comp. - John Earnshaw 24/05/14

Just a reminder that the Sale Festival Photographic Competition entries have to be in by Tuesday 3rd June but as from tomorrow the Waterside Arts Centre will be closed until 5rd June, so entries can now be handed in next door at the Sale Library.

As part of its celebrations for Festival Week, Sale Festival 2014 is running a Photographic Competition for keen Amateur Photographers on the theme of 'The Old and The New'. We would love you to enter the competition, and with a theme like this, the opportunities are vast.

But "The Old and The New", what does it mean. Well basically, it's anything that you perceive of as Old or New, or a combination of the two. It could be a person, an animal, a new or old building, old or new trains or cars, or anything else you care to think of that depicts the theme in the way you interpret it. The list is endless. And we're not trying to define where New finishes and Old starts - we'll leave that for you to decide.

You could even mix the two up and go for a juxtaposition of the two. All around you in everyday life you will see instances of "The Old and The New " and the possibilities are limitless - a bud bursting into life, a portrait of your granddad, and many, many more. Wherever you go, you'll find examples of "The Old and The New" and you won't have to travel far to encounter great shots - and we would love to see them

So come on, get snapping away, and get your entries in to this competition, and you could win one of the great prizes on offer, as well as having your pictures displayed at the Waterside Gallery in Sale. Every entrant will have at least one of their prints displayed in the exhibition at Sale Waterside which will run for 4 weeks from the competition prize giving (13th June).

You can enter up to 4 pictures with a maximum size of 26 x 38cm, and don't forget there is also a junior competition for the under 16's.

A full set of rules can be downloaded from here.

Update - Joyce Hollows 12/05/13

Sale Photographic Society was certainly the place to be last Thursday, when a large audience of club members and visitors was shown another superb lecture.

Alex Hyde's remarkable lecture, entitled 'Close Encounters', took us on a journey which showed us wildlife and its habitatin Borneo, Madagascar and the U.K.

Alex's photographic skills were apparent in his technically excellent record photographs of insects and small mammals, and he was very happy to share information on how he produced his photographs, and also how the audience coulduse similar techniques in macro and micro photography.

His expertise extended to some breathtakingly beautiful artistic shots of small creatures, using extremely detailedphotos to produce stunning pattern pictures.

Throughout the evening the overall picture was of a man deeply dedicated to the natural world and some of its smallest inhabitants. Everyone in the audience enjoyed the presentation, and he was received with enthusiastic applause. We hope that he will visit us again with another of his lectures, and look forward to his inclusion in the syllabus for next year.

Club members and visitors were also treated to a brilliant, but different, lecture earlier in the year, when Duncan McEwen visited, to present his lecture entitled 'Scotland, Land of Light.' We were shown stunning images which Duncan had taken during his journeys in his native Scotland.

Whilst many of his images were taken in bright sunlight, Duncan also showed us some which made the best of poorer light, demonstrating how even rainy days can be used to produce atmospheric and very pleasing photographs.

Duncan's enthusiasm is boundless, and although he made his work seem easy, we were all aware of the hours of cold, wet, sometimes snowy, days he must have spent to produce the excellent quality of his images.

It was refreshing to see a lecture illustrated by colour slides, which are a real credit to his photographic skills, and many of our members felt great nostalgia for the non-digital days, although we all appreciate the new techniques available with digital photography.

So, our photographic year is off to a good start, and we all appreciate the efforts of our syllabus secretaries for their organisation, and also the people who worked hard to promote and publicise these events.

Three-Way Battle - Richard Parish 18/11/12

The Three-Way Battle with MAPS and Altrincham/Hale took place on Tuesday, 14th November at MAPS. It was preceded by some desperate phone calls. Firstly, Altrincham contacted me on the Monday evening, just as I was leaving for our Committee meeting - none of their members would be able to attend the Battle, and they needed to get their prints to MAPS, they were delivered to my house while I was at the meeting. During the meeting, John Earnshaw got a call which he later said was from the MAPS Battle organiser, and could someone contact him urgently. When I did, around 10 p.m., he said the judge who had been booked had got flu and couldn't come; he had tried 'all the local judges on the list' and no-one was available - should the Battle be postponed? I said I'd have a go, and rang Dave Hollows who reminded me that he had images in the competition and would not qualify as a judge. He suggested Graham Shaw who, fortunately was available and willing, and hadn't even seen our Merits competition. Phew!

So the Battle went ahead, and Graham gave an excellent performance. The PDIs were shown first and, after several recounts, we were ahead of MAPS by one point, with Altrincham trailing by a further 6 points. 'Best Image' went to Andy Carpenter's 'Twentieth of a Second' congratulations, Andy!

The Prints' round again required several recounts before the scores were agreed but Altrincham came out 4 points ahead of us and we were 7 points ahead of MAPS. Luckily, this was enough to make Sale the Winners overall. Many thanks and congratulations to all who offered images.

Next year, we shall be hosting the competition, which will become a Four-Way Battle as Stockport have agreed, very enthusiastically, to join in.

Sale Festival Photo. Comp. - John Earnshaw 08/04/12

As part of its celebrations for Festival Week, Sale Festival 2012 is running a Photographic Competition for keen Amateur Photographers on the theme of 'Our Great British Heritage' and with a theme like this, the opportunities are vast.

The remarkable and surprising thing about this small country of ours is its amazing variety of people, culture, countryside and history. It's true that wherever you go in Britain, you'll find castles, stately homes, statues, churches, pubs, villages, and cities, to name but a few, and all surrounded by the beautiful British countryside that frames them. And also of course, let's not forget about the people who connect to these emblems of Britishness, the activities that take place in them and the animals that live in them - and the British weather we suffer to enjoy them!

Our unique traditions and the history that embraces them are wide ranging indeed, and apart from the obvious aspects of them, there are many other less obvious aspects which we sometimes take for granted. We have magnificent beaches, a wonderful canal and river system; iconic structures ranging from Blackpool Tower to Stonehenge, all of which are studded with history.

Wherever you go in Britain, you'll find examples of our remarkable British Heritage and you never have to travel far to enjoy some aspect of British lifestyle, British people or even the varied types of British wildlife, all of which form part of what makes Britain the place it is..

So, whether it's a picture of your favourite castle, a city skyline, a vintage car or simply a picture of you and your friends having a drink in the pub, they are all pictures that depict 'Our Great British Heritage', and we would love to see them. So come on, get snapping away, and get your entries in to this competition, and you could win one of the great prizes on offer, as well as having your pictures displayed at the Waterside Gallery in Sale.

You have until Monday May 28th to put your entry in, and a full set of rules can be obtained from the Box Office at Sale Waterside or downloaded from here.

In the second half, there will be images to music showing the wonderful range of colours seen between sunrise and sunset.

Richard was on the British Antartic Survey from 1967 to1969 and for a further year from 1970 to 1971. With his first serious camera, which he bought on the way out to Antartica, he took many colour slides capturing this beautiful landscape in sometimes amazing lighting conditions.

Three way battle - Richard Parish 12/11/11

An update from yesterday's three way battle where Daryl Giles was the referee, and definitely a game of two halves.

The first half was the PDI competition, with all three contestants participating. From quite early, it was evident that we were not scoring particularly well. We did have three images held back for the higher scores (see below). Although totals were not announced at this point, they were later revealed as: Alt/Hale 201, MAPS 193, SPS 191.

The second half was for prints, but MAPS did not participate - they no longer do prints at all. Our performance picked up, and four images were held back, including the eventual first and second. Scores for this half were Alt/Hale 186, SPS 201.

So we lost the PDIs, won the prints, and won overall.

PDI highlights Pat Holmes, "Select Your Own" 17/20 Dave Hollows, "Lentil Stall" 18/20 Mike Henfield, "Wool Stall, Stockport" 18/20

Prints Chris Mercer, "Something for the Weekend, Sir?" 18/20 Mike Bannister, "Time to Cough Up" 18/20 Chris Mercer "The Butchers" 19/20 Richard Parish, "Upset at the Floating Market" 20/20

MAPS were on the ball in announcing the date for the next Battle: Tuesday 13th November (2012), to be in the same format even though they will again not do prints.
